Would you know why Irina Kolpakova coaches at ABT, and not at the Mariinsky or VBA?

If I remember correctly, Kolpakova used to teach at VBA in the 1990s but was later invited to ABT by Baryshnikov. Kolpakova herself says that she’d never dreamed of living in the states. Things just happened. She does love New York, though. In one of her interviews she talks about the city with great affection and enthusiasm. I suppose she has a real connection with that place (and ABT) now. Although, she does travel and comes to St Petersburg often. I think Tsiskaridze has made an effort to involve her with VBA.

Thoughts on Misty Copland not performing the 32 fouettés in swan lake?

If she can’t perform 32 fouettés, she should not be dancing “Swan Lake”. It really is that black and white (no pun intended).

Since you noted that you are not based in Russia this might be hard to answer but I needed to ask anyway: Is ballet seen as a highly social event? When I see videos from the crowd you can often hear people talking and usually they clap to the music when it fits the style of dance/music and not just at the end of a scene – both things that would be seen as very rude where I come from. Is that just part of how ballet is perceived in Russia? Thank you for your hard work 🙂 <3

Thanks 🙂 Russians have a special relationship with ballet. I think, to some degree, it’s in our blood. I have heard people say that clapping during the performance is rude. Personally, I never do it because I feel that it could throw the dancer off or make it more difficult for them to hear the music. I don’t think Russian audiences mean any harm though. They are just genuinely enthusiastic and feel that clapping will show their appreciation and will encourage the dancer.

Is it possible for dancers to dance for 2 companies? I saw that Ernest Latypov is now a principal with NOVAT and first soloist with Mikhailovsky with performances scheduled for both. Doesn’t that mean he’s reallyyy in demand??

It’s not impossible. I feel like more and more dancers are serving two masters these days: Diana Vishneva used to dance with the Mariinsky and ABT, Daniil Simkin is dancing with both ABT and Staatballett, Vladimir Shklyarov is working with both the Mariinsky and Staatsballett, Svetlana Zakharova is a prima at the Bolshoi and La Scala. etc. It really depends on the dancer. If they are able to manage two different repertoires in two different companies without the quality of their work diminishing, then more power to them.

Not Vaganova based but I wanted to add Royal Ballet School Diaries to ballet based fiction.

Hi! I’m the anon who asked about the music in Russian productions of Swan Lake. When watching different videos of productions of Swan Lake I kinda noticed the music for the fouettés part is different, and researching more it looks like it’s a Bolshoi thing? Can’t attach links in asks, but I’ve been watching some YT videos also on Mariinski productions and they use the same music other companies such as ROH. I don’t know if I’ve made things clearer or if I’m just terrible at explaining myself :/

Could you possibly send me the name of the YouTube video you’re referring to through Ask? I can’t seem to find the video myself and I’m very curious to see it now.
